Impactful:

As we inch closer to the end of another school year, our seniors are preparing for what comes next, whether that is college, the workforce, the military, or another path. While this transition is especially relevant for them, it is a reminder for all students that one skill will matter in every setting; and that skill is communication.

Clear, purposeful communication starts with understanding that intent does not always equal impact. What matters most is how a message is received. Being thoughtful about how words will be heard helps align communication with the goal at hand.

The words used also connect to the purpose of what is at hand. Learning to use clear and accurate language that reflects the values of a team, school, or workplace shows focus and professionalism. In today’s world, this extends beyond in-person conversations. A student’s digital presence can communicate their skills, growth, and character before they ever speak. However, I'll say it, and say it again and again: Be careful of what your online profile/footprint says about you!

At times, communication is challenged in moments of crisis. How we respond to setbacks or dilemmas, ask for feedback, and handle difficult conversations says a great deal about who we are and how we lead.

Just as important is the ability to listen. Asking questions, staying curious, and seeking to understand others is what strengthens teams and helps move work forward.

As our seniors prepare to take their next step, and as all of our students continue to grow, my message is simple: be clear, be purposeful, and keep your goal in mind. When we do that, our communication becomes more effective, and so do we.
