Impactful:

“The act of listening must always precede action.” I came across this concept recently, and it resonated with me as it has become the foundation of my approach with Spectrum High School’s Student Voice Collaborative (SVC). The SVC is made up of representatives from each respective grade within our high school program and their purpose is to give Spectrum High School students representation in decision-making and to provide an opportunity to directly impact the development and improvement of Spectrum High School.

In school leadership, it’s easy to lean on our own expertise and dismiss student ideas that don’t seem feasible or immediate. However, I’ve learned that simply listening is the most critical step. Even when a suggestion can’t be implemented, explaining the "why" validates our students’ feedback. It turns a "no" into a valuable learning opportunity about the complexities of leadership and service.

The SVC has taught me that seeking out a wide range of perspectives, from the students who lead every club to those who feel the traditional school day just doesn't fit them, provides the realistic insights we need to impact meaningful change. By focusing on these voices, we are able to build a stronger bridge between the administrative offices and the classroom. These students help us ensure that our school isn't just a place of compliance, but a community where every individual feels their perspective actually carries weight.

The relationships I’ve fostered with this group are more than just a successful initiative; they are the heart of the culture we strive for across our entire campus. By leading with a "listening first" mindset, we’ve built a level of trust and appreciation that has been incredibly rewarding. I’m grateful for the SVC's honesty and look forward to continuing the journey of improvement together.

Practical:

We are currently developing our 5-Year Strategic Plan, and we want you at the table with us.

Education is not a solo endeavor. It is a collective responsibility we all share in preparing our students for the world of tomorrow. To ensure our plan reflects the needs and aspirations of our community, we will be hosting a series of listening sessions.

This is your official heads-up! These sessions are your primary opportunity to have a voice, share your perspective, and help us define what excellence looks like for our future.

Please keep your eyes peeled on your inbox and our social media channels for the full schedule.
