Impactful:

One of my favorite parts of this time of the school year is seeing our teachers’ professional growth move from a desire into a reality. Our teacher evaluation system is designed to support professional growth within teacher practice. Lately, I have been feeling especially encouraged by the progress our teachers are making.

Across the building, I am seeing intentional routines, the continued development of classroom systems, and learning environments that feel focused and purposeful. These shifts do not happen by accident. They come from educators being reflective, open to feedback, and willing to refine their practices in ways that better serve students.

Mr. DeHaan’s (Social Studies teacher) classroom is a great example of this work in action. His classroom management approach is rooted in PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, which emphasizes reinforcing positive behaviors. He has taken this a step further by organizing students into teams. This year, the teams are named Rubicundus, Niveus, Viridis, and Caeraleum, which are Latin words for the colors red, white, green, and blue. Ultimately, these efforts create a sense of belonging, shared accountability, and just the right amount of fun. The result is a classroom that runs smoothly with minimal disruption and a clear focus on learning. Expectations are understood, students are motivated, and time is spent where it matters most.

This is what meaningful professional growth looks like. It is focused, student centered, and makes a positive difference each day. I am proud of the work our teachers are doing and grateful for the commitment they continue to demonstrate when it comes to improving their craft.
