Impactful:
My inspiration this week comes from George Couros again. He challenged my thinking with something that I know deep down is true, but if I’m being honest, still stretches me. His message…??? We all need to surround ourselves with people who challenge us. Not “yes” people. Not “comfort zone” people. People who will tell us the truth, even when it’s not easy to hear.
George lays out three big reasons why this matters. First, they help us recognize that… yep… we might be wrong. I know, right? That one hits. But it’s real. And it’s important. Being open to the idea that our perspective isn’t always the only one (or even the right one) keeps our egos in check and opens the door to growth. Humility is a leadership skill.
Second, different perspectives resonate with different people. Building a strong team doesn’t mean surrounding ourselves with copies of ourselves. It means bringing in people who think, work, and relate in different ways. That’s where the magic happens if those on the team, especially the leaders, are willing to listen.
And finally, the best ideas usually don’t live at the “extremes”. The best ideas are often shaped somewhere in the middle. So, having people around us who challenge our thinking helps us get there. It sharpens our ideas, strengthens our plans, and ultimately makes the work better. Feedback isn’t a threat to leadership. It is leadership.
