Impactful:

I’m concerned about something. It’s big. No, it’s really BIG. We’re consuming online content at an all-time high—of course, we are. But what’s the real impact? What’s this doing to us? More importantly, what’s it doing to our future? To our kids?

"Brain Rot" is Oxford’s Word of the Year. It’s defined as: “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as the result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging. Also: something characterized as likely to lead to such deterioration”.

This is your Public Service Announcement (PSA): Brain Rot gets straight to the point about the crazy amounts of mindless online content we absorb every single day. It’s not just harmless scrolling. It’s content that is so intellectually unchallenging that it’s actually making us less intelligent. Yes, less intelligent.

So, what can we do about it? Step one: recognize it’s a problem. Beyond that, HERE is more information on Brain Rot, along with some practical tips to avoid falling victim to it.

Thanks for reading!

Practical:

The holiday season is here! We hope you had the opportunity to spend some time with family and friends during our extended Thanksgiving weekend at the end of November! The month of December is always a “buzzing” month at Spectrum High School. We also hope you were able to make it out last Thursday night for our Winter Fine Arts Choir concert. A special thank you to Mr. Kempenich and Mrs. Sundberg as well as their choir students, for putting on a fantastic show. Additionally, we hope you can join us this week on Thursday evening for our Winter Fine Arts Band concert. Mrs. Pallin and Mrs. McGorry’s students have been busy preparing for what promises to be a very entertaining evening of music. Finally, I invite you to come on out and support our winter athletic teams as they work hard to represent SHS with their best efforts.

As always, thank you for the opportunity to work with your student(s). We are extremely fortunate to have a community of families at our school that we can count on in the journey of education.
