Impactful:
I was reading an educational post on X the other day. It was about “perfectionism” and the danger it can pose to young students who spend too much of their time obsessing about their academic performance in school. It got me thinking about a book I read this past summer that was about golf called, “Make Your Next Shot Your Best Shot”, by Dr. Ron Rotella. Yes, I golf, or at least try to golf. If you play this silly sport (no offense intended as I truly love the game), you know that the pursuit of “perfection” is quite impossible when it comes to it. Inevitably, there will be mistakes, poor shots, inaccurate judgments, and missed opportunities. What I love about golf is that it is impossible to master. Even the best players in the world struggle at times due to the many areas (physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually, etc.) that golf challenges a person in all at the same time.
My hope today is to spread the word that “perfectionism” is also impossible when it comes to one’s education. It is the spirit of continuous improvement and growth that is critical to hold near and dear to your approach. After all, “perfection” is the enemy of growth. Once you attain perfection, there is nowhere to go, and we all know that there is always more to learn and experience. My encouragement today is to focus on the experience and the journey that comes with your pursuit of growth, not attaining “perfection”.
