Principal's Blog: 1/5/24

Impactful:

I referenced Inquoris (Inky) Johnson in a blog I posted back in 2022. Inky was a three year letterman and two year Captain on the Tennessee Volunteers Football team from 2004-2006. In his junior year, Inky was projected as a top thirty NFL draft pick. Unfortunately, on September 9th, 2006, he sustained a life threatening, career ending injury that paralyzed his right arm and hand. Inky is now a motivational speaker and travels the world sharing his story and message about focusing on the process of reaching our goals. His message is intended to inspire others to find joy in the journey! Here, again, is his story in more detail if you care to check it out.

I ran across Inky again the other day. He was sharing a story in blog I frequently glance at about being on an airplane and how he saw something in the bathroom that inspired him. What he saw was a simple sign that read, “Please clean up after yourself to ensure that this space is ready for the next person”. He talked about how the quote stuck with him and became a way of life for him. He was inspired to work toward giving people that followed him the best chance at their own success.

This quote resonated with me from the perspective of an educator. There are many things that make a teacher a great teacher. I believe one of those qualities is that teachers are often striving to leave this place better than when we found it for the next generation. I have no doubt that our teachers at SHS feel this way and have a deep passion for doing so. By sharing this insight and perspective I hope to strengthen the bond we have with our families and students. Knowing and trusting that we have your best interests at the top of our list of priorities is powerful!

Thank you for entrusting your child’s education to us.

Practical:

Back to reality!!! School is back in session and I saw lots of tired students making their way back into our doors here at SHS on Tuesday morning. Please remind your student(s) about the importance of getting enough sleep and taking care of themselves both physically and mentally. The first semester will come to an end next Friday (1/12). With this in mind, please do not hesitate to reach out to the resources we have available here at the school if you or your student is looking for answers or struggling in any way. We are here to help support your success.
