Principal's Blog: 1/6/23

Impactful:

A quick story for you all today: A good friend of mine is an assistant principal at a MN elementary school.  Since becoming an assistant principal three years ago, he has aspired to move into a head principal position.  Not because the person he works under is inept at his/her job, but because he would like to have the opportunity to lead a school and make a difference doing something he is truly passionate about.  He actually loves his current job!  Recently, he was offered a position as a head principal at a school that would require him to uproot his family, move a great distance away from his home, and leave the job he loves.  After much deliberation, he decided to decline the offer and stay in his current role as assistant principal.  I found this situation interesting because of how badly I knew he wanted to lead a school on his own.  In speaking with him about his choice, he provided me with some tremendous insight.  He explained that as he wrestled with the decision, he landed in a place where it was clear that he would need to turn down a position that he wanted, but he knew was not a good fit for his life. Instead, he would stay in a position that he currently loved and a place where he could best support his family and their collective needs.

Far too often in our lives, we want what we can’t have.  Many times, these are things we’ve waited for and worked toward for many years, and at times, it leads us to making some poor choices in an attempt to reach that goal we’ve worked so hard for.  There are many ways to look at this story, but my message today is to pass on the idea of the power of patience.  As my friend described to me, he is in a good situation.  He is in a place where he can continue to learn and grow his leadership skills, and in time, the right opportunity will come along in which he’ll feel fully comfortable stepping into his future.

Practical:

It was great welcoming students and staff back this week from our winter break!  Our return to school didn't last long as the 13th largest snowstorm in Minnesota’s history decided to put us in E-Learning mode this past Wednesday.  Nonetheless, we’re back, and now it is crunch time.  Friday, January 13th marks the end of the first semester.  If your child is in need of academic support, please reach out to our teachers, counselors, and administrators.  We are willing to brainstorm with you and create a plan to help your child succeed.

As always, you can help support all of our efforts by staying connected and monitoring his/her progress via Infinite Campus Parent Portal.  We are here to help!!!
