Principal's Blog: 9/2/22

Dear Spectrum High School Families,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! We’ve had a great first week of school and many thanks are deserved across our community.  I want to first recognize our staff.  Custodial/grounds crew, lunch staff, paraprofessionals, office staff, bus drivers, school counselors, coaches, teachers, and fellow administrators, a huge “thank you” is deserved for the preparatory work done to get this year started on the right foot.  I also want to thank our parents/guardians for the trust and faith you’ve shown in us to continue to deliver a top notch educational experience for your student(s).  We are always striving to be better at what we do!  And finally, thank you to our student body for your resilience and positive attitudes. Our students at SHS continually deserve acknowledgement for the flexibility they display and their approach to the challenges they face.

Once again, throughout this school year, I plan to continue with my adopted approach to the high school principal’s blog from last year. My intention every few weeks will be to provide something “impactful” and “practical”.  My purpose with the “impactful” will be to provide perspective, while I hope you find the “practical” information related to happenings here at SHS helpful.

Impactful:

The 2022-23 Spectrum Schools’ theme is “Onward”. Spectrum is entering our 16th year and the second year of the district’s current strategic plan.  As we continue to navigate uncertain times, learning is always the answer to the challenges we encounter.  Our goal this year is to keep the momentum we steadily built last school year as we move closer to what normal is for our future.

We have taken our first steps, so now it is time to move “Onward”.

Practical:

A quick reminder regarding the shift in our Advisory program’s focus for the first five weeks of school: Our new holding place for the implementation of both our AVID-based skill development (life skills) and our Senior Capstone preparation will now take place in our Sting Time Advisory program with each grade level having a specific focus.

9th Grade Advisory

Focus: Organization, note-taking, study skills, problem-solving, etc.

10th Grade Advisory

Focus: Growth Mindset, Stress Management, Resiliency, etc.

11th Grade Advisory

Focus: Capstone Preparation

12th Grade Advisory

Focus: Capstone Preparation

*Flexible available based on student progress (utilizing earned PERKS)

Advisory sessions (approximately 30 minutes) will be held during each A/B Block day for the first five weeks of school during Sting Time (8/29-9/30). Due to the critical nature of these focal areas for each grade level, all high school students (9th - 12th grade) will be required to attend these scheduled Advisory sessions.
