Principal's Blog: 4/1/22

Greetings Spectrum Families,

Impactful:

By now you’ve probably heard the news that SHS has adopted and will be implementing a new practice regarding student/staff cell phone use in the classroom starting next week.  While this shift is an adjustment to the practice in some classrooms at SHS, it remains consistent with the school’s policy on personal electronic devices.  Very important to the development of the practice was providing our students with a personal choice each class period and day regarding their personal device(s) along with the intention to help build skills of self-regulation, self-monitoring, and appropriate use.

Spectrum faculty, staff, and administration feel that the change serves our student’s best interests when it comes to learning.  We also feel it provides us the best opportunity, for the remainder of this year, to deliver the education that each of our students deserves and you as parents/guardians should expect from our school.  Here is the presentation I used to help convey the details of this newly adopted practice to our high school students during assemblies this past week.

Practical:

Welcome to spring!  Well, kind of…. Although the weather hasn’t cooperated with the change of seasons lately the calendar says otherwise.  When students think of the month of April they often make the connection that we are getting close to the end of the school year.  The responsibilities that come with being a high school student shift from homework and studying to relaxing and hanging with friends.  Students are relieved to only have the pressure of managing the summer job one has picked up to earn some extra spending money or save for college.

However, I encourage you to be aware of what we educators call, “the spring slide”.  Some things to remember and remind you (students), or your student(s) (parents), of as we get closer to the end of the year include: staying diligent about your/their study habits, ensuring the completion of all homework assignments, and continuing to put forth the maximum amount of effort necessary to reach your/their academic goals.  Don’t be a victim of “the spring slide”.
