Principal's Blog: 2/4/22

Greetings Spectrum Families,

Impactful:

It’s time once again to broach the topic of mental health!  As our second semester progresses and the winter months drag on, it’s important to take an inventory of how things are going with yourself and those closest to you.  It is always a good thing to check in.  And so, in this week’s blog I am encouraging all of you, as parents/guardians or friends/family members, to reach out and talk with your loved ones about the status of their self-esteem, self-image, and self-concept.  As you’re all aware, some things have returned to normal since we’ve been navigating a global pandemic for almost two years.  Other practices remain inconsistent with what we were once accustomed to, and many things have likely changed forever.  What is certain is that there are more challenges to come.  Therefore, we need to support one another and normalize the conversation around mental health in our homes.

If you are looking for help on how to talk your your student(s) about the topic of mental health, here are some resources:

Resource #1

Resource #2

If you find that you are in need of further support, please do not hesitate to reach out to our counseling department, who can help with locating additional resources for your individual family needs.  Although I don’t believe that, as they say,  “we’re all in the same boat”.  I do believe “we are all in the same ocean” and we must all do whatever we can to support one another.  Please feel free to access some helpful information here on our website as well.

Practical:

During the month of March, Spectrum students will have the opportunity to register for classes for the 2022-23 school year.  Prior to registration it is extremely important for students to gain a clear understanding of graduation requirements and available courses.  Spectrum provides some important tools that can aid in your and your student’s awareness of requirements as well as decisions on courses to enroll in for next year.  In the coming weeks our updated course catalog will also be available online for your perusal, which will be communicated via email from our counseling department.  Please don’t forget that Mr. Mayes and Mrs. Kobes, our school counselors, are always willing and able to help you or your student(s) understand graduation requirements or answer questions you might have about registration.
