Greetings Spectrum Families,

Impactful:

Kindness.  It’s a simple word. The Macmillian Dictionary states that “kindness comes from the Old English word ‘kyndnes’ meaning ‘nation’ or ‘produce, increase’. The word is further derived from the Middle English word ‘kindenes’ meaning ‘noble deeds’ or ‘courtesy’.”

I have three children of my own, the oldest of which is 14 now.  Since sending each of them through the door of their first school, my wife and I have always strived to convey how important it is for them to treat others with kindness.  I see it every day.  Kindness that is.  In the halls of Spectrum High School.  In the classrooms as I work my way through while conducting observations, and in the lunchroom where the frenzy of somewhere between 50 - 100 high schoolers socialize and energize at the same time.

My purpose in writing about kindness today is to spread the news about the fact that we have a great school and your student belongs here and is welcome here!  I encourage each of you to speak with your student(s) about kindness.  Ask them for examples of their kind acts throughout their day(s), but most importantly, encourage them to not miss out when the opportunity to do something kind for someone else presents itself.

Practical:

Spectrum schools are entering their 16th year of operation!  With a new year comes a new theme and this year’s theme, we believe, is spot on.  Our theme for the 2021-22 school year is “reVision”.  Having faced the challenges of a global pandemic, our schools have learned valuable lessons, built skills necessary for us to help our students succeed, and “revised” our systems to fit a new age of education.  With the “reVision” of so many things throughout the past 18 months, we’ve appreciated your support, and ask that you continue to help us through supporting your student(s) as we work to make this year the best yet!
