Principal's Blog: 3/19/21

Dear Spectrum High School Families,

Starting in October of this school year, our brand new Student Voice Collaborative (SVC) group began meeting.  The SVC is made up of 12 student members, 3 from each grade level; and 6 staff members including 2 teachers, 2 school counselors, and 2 administrators.

The purpose of SVC is to give Spectrum High School students representation in decision making and to provide an opportunity to directly impact the development and improvement of Spectrum High School.  One of our long term goals with the students who are involved is to build their capacities in the areas of leadership, citizenship, teamwork, respect, professionalism, communication, collaboration, and representation.  Each of our student members were specifically selected based upon recommendations from staff, which was followed with an inquiry session about their individual interest level in joining the group.

So far this school year, the group has been able to meet five times, which has allowed us to broach relevant and pressing topics such as improving distance and hybrid learning models, communication methods available to our student representatives, and the ongoing challenge of meeting the mental and emotional health needs of our student body.

The information we’ve obtained from our student representatives has been thoughtful, intriguing, and most importantly, valuable to our efforts to improve the average SHS student’s experience. We are excited about the possibilities this new SHS student group represents for our overall growth and development, and we are truly grateful for the partnership we have with our student members.
