Principal's Blog: 1/24/20-2/7/20

Greetings,Leland

During the month of March, Spectrum students will have the opportunity to register for classes for the upcoming 2020-21 school year.  Prior to registration it is extremely important for students to gain a clear understanding of graduation requirements and available courses.  Spectrum provides some important tools that can aid in your and your student’s awareness of requirements as well as decisions on courses to enroll in for next year.  In the coming weeks our updated course catalog will also be available online for your perusal, which will be communicated via email from our counseling department. Please don’t forget that Ms. Matheson and Mr. Mayes, our school counselors, are always willing and able to help you or your student(s) understand graduation requirements or answer questions you might have about registration.

As we move closer to these important dates, I would encourage you to begin having conversations with your student(s) about courses they plan to enroll in next year.  We would love to see all of our students be challenged in their coursework while maintaining a healthy balance. If your student(s) are specifically interested in a subject area, encourage them to take an AP or C@SH course in that area.  It is important for all students to challenge themselves academically. In fact, there is more and more literature surfacing that describes how college admissions officers are just as focused on the rigor level of courses taken than they are on the grade earned by the student.  It is also an important life skill for our students to have to work harder in a class or two. Life for all of us is full of challenges that require us to ask for help and struggle through. It can be extremely beneficial for students to experience a class where they work hard, learn, and perhaps only end up earning a grade of C.  Through these challenges, students can learn who they truly are as a student and more importantly, as a person.

Sincerely,

Mark W. Leland
