Service Learning at Spectrum
Eating Disorder Awareness
Students will investigate and address the ever growing issue of eating disorders not only in society, but in their school culture as well. Through several different avenues of research, interviews and service, the student will explore and implement ways to confront, aid, and prevent this growing addiction.
Films to Make a Difference
Work with a group to make a short (2 minute)
video to address a social issue.
Products include:
Pre-production (research, script, storyboard, etc)
Production (your group's video)
Host service film related service events
Reflection (critiques)
Demonstration (present film at Spring Fine Arts)
All students will be asked to work in front of and behind the camera. You will be required to do much of the work outside of class time. All groups will present their films to the public.
Green Group
The Green Group is looking for students who enjoy the outdoors and the environment. We will focus on environmental issues and awareness. Last year activities included a newsletter, looking into a recycling program, and participating in the Elk River Energy Expo. The newsletter talked about saving money by saving energy, composting, natural insecticides and much more. This year we will once again be doing a project for the Elk River Energy Expo, along with any new activities the group decides upon. We need leaders to help make the Energy Expo success!
H.A.L.O. (Healthy and Active Lifestyle Opportunities)
This group provides an opportunity for students to get involved in the community by helping promote a healthy and active lifestyle. This is accomplished by being involved in, and by putting on events in the community. These events give youth in the community an opportunity to partake in activities that will help them lead an active and healthy lifestyle. The main focus of the group will be to plan and prepare for the 2nd Annual Active Youth Day (AYD) planned in the spring of 2010.In addition to AYD, group members will be required to attend other community events to help promote AYD, as well as doing community service that is related to leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Helping Hands for the Elderly
This service learning group will work closely with area senior citizens in a variety of ways. The goal of this group is to create understanding and awareness between generations. Students will create meaningful friendships with their adopted grandparent while embracing another time period. Some of the activities they will partake in include: Holiday activities such as Christmas Caroling, May Baskets, etc., Adopt-a-Grandparent, Fall Yard Clean-Up, Activity Hours with seniors and much more.
This group requires 2-6 hours per month spent outside of the classroom.
Hunger Outreach
Quarterly Projects focus on understanding and Empathy.
Poverty and Hunger in different countries.
Cost per serving of food groups, individual foods.
Journal feelings and moods while spending $4 or less on eating in a day.
Investigate hunger on student achievement in school and school related programs to boost nutrition in school children.
Required Availability to participate:
3rd Thursday each month from 3:30-7:00
Required Hours each Quarter:
5 hours per quarter

Cornerstone Car Wash, at the junction of Hwy. 10 and 171st Street in Elk River.

Random Acts of Kindness
Kindness is an awareness that each of us develops with practice and over time. Through
the kindness we give and receive, we begin to understand that weare intrinsically
connected to those around us. We realize that we are part of a human community, in
which giving and receiving kindness are vital to our health, harmony, and hope.

Tutoring in Area Schools (TAS)
Do you have a passion to help younger students succeed? Do you enjoy seeing smiles greeting you when you walk into a room? This community service opportunity may be for you.
This community service group involves the students by going into area elementary schools after school to help students who need extra help with concepts they may be struggling with.
Requirements for this group:
Commit at least one afternoon a week to go to an area school.
Students will be able to submit the time as their CO hours.
